    The Diabetes Prevention Program, one of the largest trials ever run on this question, found that modest weight loss combined with activity cut progression to type 2 diabetes substantially — and outperformed the drug arm of the same study.

    For a 200‑pound person that is 10 to 14 pounds. Not a transformation, and that is the point.

    Build muscle, not just cardio

    Muscle is where most of your glucose goes. More muscle means a bigger place to put it, and resistance training improves insulin sensitivity independently of weight loss.

    Two sessions a week is the standard recommendation, and it is one of the few interventions that keeps working as you age.

Where Do Supplements Actually Fit?

This is the section most pages on this topic get wrong in one direction or the other. They either promise a supplement will fix everything, or they dismiss the entire category. Neither is accurate.

The honest summary: no supplement replaces the five habits above, and the major clinical bodies do not recommend supplements as a treatment for glycemic control. Some ingredients have interesting research behind them, but the evidence is far weaker than the marketing suggests, and dose matters enormously.

Chromium, the one you will see most

Chromium is the ingredient most blood sugar supplements are built around. It is genuinely involved in how the body handles insulin, which is why it keeps appearing.

But the research is contradictory. Larger reviews have generally not found a consistent reduction in HbA1c, and the American Diabetes Association does not recommend chromium supplementation for glycemic control. Studies that did show effects mostly used doses in the range of 200 to 1,000 micrograms daily.

Why the dose number matters when you shop. Many products on the market contain a tiny fraction of the researched amount — sometimes under 1 microgram — while still listing chromium prominently on the front of the label.
